Pine essential Oil

Pine Essential Oil

(Pinus sylvestris)

topical aromatic

Pine essential oil is steam distilled from the needles of the Pinus sylvestris tree, which originates in Austria, the United States, and Canada.

For those that celebrate Christmas, there is nothing quite like the sounds, the visions and the SMELLS of the holiday season.  Fresh wassail simmering on the stove, Peppermint treats tempting your sweet tooth, and of course the wonderfully festive scent of the Christmas Tree.

I don’t know about you, but the scent of pine is like a time machine for me. It puts me right back into my living room, sitting around a live tree with twinkling lights and more wrapped presents than any child should ever have a right to.   Of course now we are older and some may still get a live tree with others have opted for the convenience of an artificial tree.  But instead of those harsh, chemical laden “pine scent in a bottle” sprays, why not get the next best thing to a real tree – OIL from a REAL TREE!!

But be careful…according to wikipedia, synthetic pine oils accounted for 90% of sales as of 2000.  Young Living oils are 100% pure, authentic oils that you and your family can use with full peace of mind.

christmas forest blend

Not only does this oil remind me of the holidays, Pine essential oil has a refreshing and empowering aroma. When diffused, this oil has a calming scent.

It is also an important ingredient in Young Living’s RC blend which I love to use in the shower.   When the steam interacts with RC (or Pine) is it invigorating and energetic.

How to use: For aromatic or topical use.  Diffuse, inhale, or add to bath water.  Apply to crown of head, back of neck, behind ears or inside wrists.  Possible skin sensitivity.

  1. Diffuse alone or with Idaho Balsam Fir and Cedarwood to transform your home into a virtual forest!
  2. Collect pine cones, clean and bake for 30 minutes at 200°.  Generously add pine essential oil to pine cones.  Seal in a ziploc bag for 2-3 weeks.  Remove from bag and place in tree to infuse your living area with the power of pine.
  3. No pine cones?  Use rattan sticks!  Add pine essential oil and place strategically throughout the tree.
  4. There is a reason why Pine-Sol has been a traditional popular cleaner – the scent of pine is crisp and clean.  Add to your favorite cleaner to enjoy the scent all year round.
  5. Diffuse in the car while driving around looking at holiday lights.
  6. Add to your shower or bath and inhale deeply for a rewarding experience.
  7. Make Terra Cotta ornaments with the kids and infuse them with the power of pine!

Clove essential oil

Clove

(Syzygium aromaticum)

topical aromatic

Clove essential oil is used aromatically and topically  while Clove Vitality essential oil is a dietary oil and therefore can be ingested.

Clove is an important ingredient in Young Living’s Thieves oil blend, and has a scent that is very warm and inviting.   Clove is the perfect scent for fall and winter – it reminds me of Thanksgiving, Mulled cider, crisp nights, and Christmas.  It comes from the flower buds of the evergreen tree and the buds resemble small nails or tacks.   Always dilute Clove when using topically.

Gifts of the Magi using essential oils

With my newfound love of essential oils, I decided to get creative this year.  That’s usually a bad idea, since I’m not the creative type.  So I have to resort to stealing/modifying someone else’s idea.   And this is what I found at http://www.theidearoom.net

gifts of christmas infographic

If you’d like to start with some basics, first read my post about Bath Salts using your premium starter kit.

gift of christmas pics

Supplies:

Airtight glass containers:  I got mine at Hobby Lobby.  My containers are small because I was making 10 of these for my family members.  But Hobby Lobby, or any crafting store, should have a wide variety of jars.

Gift Boxes:  These i picked up at Michael’s and are the perfect size for these little jars

“Hay”: brown crinkle paper, again at Michael’s, acted as my poor man’s hay.  Plus, since I was shipping these boxes, the paper worked well as padding.

Chocolate Gold coins: Available most everywhere candy is sold this time of year.

Twine: I used twine to tie the labels onto the packages.  To make the labels, I used picmonkey.com which is a free and easy infographic making program.

Myrrh Bath Salts

What you’ll need

Salt:  For these bath salts I used a 3 different types of salt.  Epsom salt for therapeutic benefit, Kosher salt for texture and then Himalayan Salt for just a pop of color.  But any combination of salts will work for this recipe

Olive Oil: Just a hint of Extra Virgin Olive oil or any other carrier oil will help keep this mix from drying out.

Myrrh essential oil:  Young Living carries a wide variety of oils.  Buy your Myrrh essential oil HERE.

Lavender essential oil (optional):  Myrrh, by itself, isn’t very fragrant.  I did not add anything to my mix because I wanted to stay true to the religious significance of the oils and the gift, but adding a few drops of lavender will enhance the aroma of this bath salt recipe.  I decided instead to just include a sample packet of lavender with instructions to add it for a more fragrant experience.

Myrrh bath salts

  • 1/2 cup of Epsom Salt
  • 1/4 cup of Himalayan salt
  • 1/4 cup of Kosher salt
  • drizzle of olive oil
  • 8-10 drops of Myrrh essential oil
  • 5 drops of lavender (optional)

Mix salts and oil together.  Add essential oils of choice and blend.  Keep in an airtight container.  Use 1/2 cup of salts for an average sized bathtub.

Frankincense Sugar Scrub:

What you’ll need:

Raw Sugar: Raw sugar is a minimally processed version of cane sugar.  The larger crystals make it desirable for a sugar scrub

White Sugar: The smaller granules of white sugar make a nice contrast against the larger crystals of the raw sugar

Olive Oil: Extra Virgin Olive Oil (or any other carrier oil) helps to keep this recipe from drying out.  Also, using a sugar scrub with olive oil leaves your  skin feeling silky smooth! The recipe calls for 1/8 of a cup of oil but I found that to be a bit much for my liking – feel free to add more.

Frankincense essential oil: Young Living carries a wide variety of essential oils.  Buy your Frankincense essential oil HERE

frankincense sugar scrub

  • 3/4 cup raw sugar
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil (or other carrier oil)
  • 8-10 drops of Frankincense essential oil
  • 5 drops orange essential oil (optional)

Mix all ingredients and seal in an air tight container.  Use as needed to exfoliate and soften skin.

Add the Myrrh Bath Salts, Frankincense Sugar Scrub and gold coin to a box and you’ve got yourself a wonderfully smelling and symbolic gift that embraces the spirituality of Christmas!
